FDR and Obama -- Cut from the Same Cloth?

After watching the clips, I am wondering, is the old adage "the more things change, the more they stay the same" relevant here?

I know you were all relatively young in 2008, but our economy was very precarious, and we were not sure whether we would face another depression like in the 1930s.  This might make the comparison all the more relevant.

  1. ''The more things change, the more they stay the same" might seem right as an adage, but during the economic depression, once something changes, they won't stay the same. They will either get better or worse. They may stay the same if nothing changes, but through out the history, each time when a president made his changes, things changed at the same time. FDR kind of made the economic situation better, and Obama also put his effort into the recovery of economy. But they are not cut from the same cloth. I would say that Obama is another piece of cloth that use the similar material as FDR and was also improved. Obama seem to imitate some actions of FDR, but base on the actual situation, he made more decisions that are focusing on how to secure the economy of the United States and protect the benefit of the world. FDR focused more on saving the United States from being over-depressed in economy.

  2. After I read these readings about each person I feel Obama and FDR's speeches were very similar in the way that they criticized past actions and advocated for a future that includes the solutions to the problems of their country. FDR made the economy better than Obama has so far. Obama's Similarities to FDR: they were both preceded by Presidents who left the economy in disarray, which made their campaigns parallel in ways, but the actions that both Presidents took once in office were very different.

  3. I believe that Obama and Franklin Roosevelt both were dealt a bad hand of cards when it came to their terms in each of their presidency. They both came into being presidents with an already destroyed economy. After those I have a hard time comparing them in their actions. I believe it is because I am more familiar with Obama's time in office then I am with Franklin Roosevelt

  4. Both Obama and FDR had very similar speeches. They both came to office with the economy and country in a mess. I think their speeches were similar because being in the same position, they had similar ideas. And considering FDR was very successful as president, Obama could have studied his policies and implemented them into his own. The only difference is FDR made more of an impact in his candidacy. Thats not to say Obama doesn't have enough time in office to more good things, but FDR did better initially.

  5. The quote "the more things change, the more they stay the same" is definitely true. Throughout history our president's are supposed to learn from one another so the same mistake does not happen twice. I'm sure president's have tried hard to accomplish this but there is always the saying "history repeats itself." This quote is also very true. Obama and FDR were both given the challenge to fix or change the economy after it had been destroyed by previous leaders. Both Obama and FDR made strong references to the mistakes of previous leaders, and encouraged a helpful plan. Obviously the time difference between FDR and Obama may seemed as the economy has changed from FDR's time, but in reality it has not, of course more advances have been made from a plolitical standpoint but both FDR and Obama were put in the same position with the same questions.

  6. After watching the clips, I believe that the old question, “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” is relevant. In both clips the men running for presidency play to their strengths. They both put down their opponents while showing themselves in a favorable light. Both clips show the Republicans destroying the nation’s economy while the Democrats were going to fix it. Throughout time, what we desire are the same fundamental things, the basic necessities, such as housing, food, and clothing. These two clips demonstrate that things do not change because the nation still needs a leader that will bring about change and hope.

  7. For the quote “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” i have absolutely no idea. However, I do know that the situations in which we were faced back in 2008 and in 19 whatever were very similar, both faced with economies whose futures people wrongly assumed were entirely dependent on the presidential election. Also, they both ran their campaigns based on hope, a brighter future, and promises we now know couldn't be kept. #thanksobama

  8. I think the quote "the more things change, the more they stay the same" is true because as the government tries more and more to make the economy better the more it stays the same. This happens because they try to hard to make things better. It was similar in both situations because they based it on the actions of the people.

  9. Barack Obama and Franklin Roosevelt are very similar in different ways. Franklin was criticized for the economies downfall and same as Obama who is blamed for the economic system in the United States right now. They were both elected as the economy was crumbling. The difference between Obama and FDR is that FDR was elected more than two terms and had more time to improve the economy unlike Obama who was elected for two terms and does not have that much time so he is in a bit of a time crunch.
