The Impact of the War on Canada

Like the United States, Canada emerged from World War II with strong rates of production, low unemployment, including increased employment opportunities for women.  Compared to the United States, how much did the influence of Canada's federal government increase over the course of the Great Depression and the second World War?

  1. Overall in both countries, both governments were extremely involved in WWII. However compared to the United States, Canada’s federal government “intervened in almost all aspects of Canadian life to regulate the war effort, ensure a smooth flow of troops and supplies, and curtail inflation”. Also “toward the end of the war, the King government launched even further social welfare policies, introducing a major veterans’ benefits program, family allowances, farm price supports, compulsory collective bargaining, and a national housing program.” One of the big, main differences between the United States government and Canada’s government during the war was that Canada still referred to the “King” and still had to fund the royal navy and royal air force because ultimately they are still connected to the United Kingdom even though they are their own country. On the other side the United States government was very involved over the course of the war as one of the top countries involved.

  2. As Meghan said both Americas and Canadas governments were both highly involved in WW2. Canadas government involvement increased greatly as the war went on. One reason for this was because they were directly linked to the United Kingdom and they were one of the forces being attacked by the germans. The US was involved throughout the whole war because they had won the previous war and wanted to defeat hitler in this one. The US was definitely more involved than Canada because Canada was kind of just connected to whatever was going on with the UK because Canada wasn't a really strong force.

  3. I believe that before the war, the US federal governement was doing much more than the Canadian therefore the federal government intervention during the WWII increased more since before they did not really do anything (except when King was prime minister for the second time when the intervention increased but still). Canada's unemployment decreased a lot since they needed war production and supplies to help Europe especially the UK. As well as in the US, women started working for the war.

  4. Canada's Federal government's influence increased a lot over the course of the Great Depression and the second World War. The control of Federal government can be shown by: 1. Department of Munitions and Supply; 2. Prices and Trade Board; 3. Social Security. Those three steps finally led to Canada's economic growth in wartime production, labour force, and employment of women. Because of the need of war, Federal government caught the chance, and strongly developed the force of producing, which created more jobs and took more control over the people. Although Canada's federal government showed inadequacies during the Great Depression, it successfully flip it over during the second World War.

  5. In Canada, the influence of the federal government increased greatly over the course of the Great Depression and the Second World War. The growth of the federal government came about because the Great Depression showed, “the inadequacies of the existing system.” The federal government controlled the department of munitions and supply, prices and trade board, and they also controlled social security. The federal government enacted social security but “by the time they came into effect they were largely unnecessary because of war production.”

  6. After I read the reading, I learned that in Canada that the government's impact increased greatly over the period of the great depression and the Second World War. Also, the US was involved throughout the whole war because they had won the previous war and wanted to defeat Hitler. This whole time Canada was trying to regulate the world effort. War was the only choice they really had during this period.

  7. canada needed federal intervention in the depression and during world war two for multiple reasons. Canada had a real fear of government change over if it didn't solve its economy. canada had 25 percent unemployment during this time meaning 25 percent of its population was roaming looking for solutions and answers for there sorrows. canada also needed to escalate its production to supply and help its desperate mother country with supplies men and food. only the federal government could organize the country in such a way. the federal government needed to intervene.

  8. In Canada, federal government control had been very effective in terms of not just getting the country out of the Great Depression but also it made them one of the wealthiest countries on earth, with negligivle unemployment and unprecedented living standards. It was the second world war that had made the country really wealthy but the influence of Canadian federal government had a very big impact on the country's development. King's government centralized the planning and production during the war years by increasing taxation and the sales of War Bonds. In addition, the federal government set up many organizations, such as Department of Munitions and Supply and Crown Corporation to oversee production of everything to do with war effort. Plus, they set up the Wartime Prices and Trade Board to employ officials whose job it was to ensure supply. Due to the effort, Canada experianced the dramatic growth in economy and by 1941 they almost had a nil unemployment rate.

  9. As the depression and the second world war went on Canada changed drastically. They learned many things of what is wrong and what is right. This helped the country a lot because these mistakes helped them learn and make them a stronger country. As the replaced there leader they always had confidence that they would help fix this country, the government had a bigger and bigger impact as time went on and this helped the country. Canada as limited there involvement in the war and let the United States do most of the work so that was a different between the two.

  10. WWII contracted the unemployment rate both Canada and the U.S. However, I do not think that U.S is more involved than Canada with the war. Canada might not have had the biggest army but it's industrious production really helped its allies won the war. Therefore, the influence of Canada's federal government over the course of war has increased. It produced more than 50 percent of aircraft automobile and ship to its allies. Not like the U.S, their influence was due to the strong army. Canada has increased federal gov's influences because of strong economy.

  11. Over the course of WWII canadas government became so much more involved in the economoy and canadas overall goverment and its duties. During the war the unemployment rate dropped to almost "nil". With the federal goernments control increasing the econmoy did as well. Women also were able to being working due to the war and the work that needed to be done with all the men fighting. In the war the governmetn also introduced unemployment insurance schemes, somethign thte government probably should have instilled a long time before, but it was better they did it then then never instilling a plan at all.

  12. It increased greatly because the plans put in place to make resources for the soldiers made jobs and helped the economy. After seeing the success in these plans, citizens started to put more trust in the government. The jobs put many back to work and put women to work. The increase of women working and given more rights increased the government following tremendously for the women support made a huge majority. Canada utilized the war effort as an opportunity to make jobs and get more back to work. Their influence depicts their own war effort as well as the governments success in bringing then nation out of the depression.

  13. During King's first run as Prime Minister, the government had little intervention, because King didn't believe in that. Civilians would write to him, asking for small amounts of cash to cover their personal needs, and he would oblige, but he never set up a government plan to help to public on a national scale. The reason why King didn't set up many government plans, was because he was afraid of looking like Communist Russia. However, instead of seeming like a good governor, he came off as lazy, disinterested, and uncaring. It especially didn't help his image, that he was mysteriously wealthy, and had a consistent money source. He lost the election of 1930 to a conservative politician named Bennett. Bennett believed in government action, and set up many plans to help the Canadian people. Unfortunately, the majority of these plans did not meet their expected outcome, and King returned to government using the clever slogan "King or Chaos". King won the vote by a landslide. King learned from his last run and Bennett's last run, and settled for applying a healthy medium as far as government intervention goes.
In conclusion, first the amount of government intervention was too little, then too much, and then just right.

  14. It seems that the federal governments role in the lives of the everyday Canadian increased relatively greatly during the WWII/post-WWII years. They expanded the government's influence with by introducing the Crown Corporations, setting up the Wartime Prices and Trade Board and the Department of Munitions and Supply, introducing social security, raising the number of civil servants by producing incredible amounts of war vehicles, ships, and aircraft, as well as bringing the unemployment rate virtually to 0%. Over this course of time the influence of Canada grew tremendously becoming on of the wealthiest nations on Earth and the 4th largest industrial producer. Go hockey

  15. Canada definitely sees the importance of federal government during the depression and 2 world war. Canada's economy boosted due to the selling of war supplies to other countries. Unemployment decreased and labor forces increased. The Canadian federal government demonstrates the power of government intervention by increasing taxation and sale of war bonds. The federal government set up and controlled various departments such as the department of munitions and supply, prices and trade board, and social security. Although women could not achieve equal pay, nevertheless their employment rate dramatically increased during the war. This is one of the evidence of the growth of economy. The federal government definitely expanded its control during the 2 world war and made Canada one of the wealthiest countries on earth.

  16. The federal government in Canada greatly increased its influence during the depression and WWII, with new leaders put in place to bring about new policies and ideas. After seeing Mackenzie King's policies early and realizing that his way of leadership would not work was beneficial. The government had to be a strong influence and early on King's approach was mroe laid back, which would not work. Later both countries experienced a drastic decrease in the unemployment rate. The war opened up many jobs for women while the men were at war. Ultimately the federal government had a major influence in producing new policies to help recover and thrive from the depression.

  17. The federal government had a huge impact on the war because it did not leave them in a serious debt like the US was. Although the US created job opportunities and cut down the unemployment rate, it still was left in a huge debt due to the borrowing from other countries. Canada did not allow themselves to get in this situation by doing very little borrowing and the sake of war bonds.

  18. Before the war, the US government was definitely more involved and were able to accomplish more. Once the war began, both the US and Canada's economies began to pick back up again. The war created jobs for not only men, but women. Factories were progressing; weapons and supplies needed to be manufactured and a labor force was necessary. As a result, the unemployment rate of both countries dramatically decreased. In addition, during World War II, Canada's federal government became more involved; they implicated new policies and set up organizations and groups that positively influenced the economy.
