  1. 1. Source D reveals that the media was focused on combating the threat of internal traitors. The Un-American Activities Committee was formed specifically to target Americans who were not patriotic or were part of activities that were disloyal to America.
    2. In source A, George C. Marshall, blamed international communism as the source of the unsuccessful Bogota revolution. Marshall made a statement to the press saying that communism was not just in Italy rather it was everywhere. In contrast, Source C discusses how communism was a moral problem rather then a political one. It goes on to say that communism had spread rapidly and that the communist victories were many.
    3. Source B assists historians understanding of the U.S. governments concern because it discusses that the true danger lies within their own government. Those who are disloyal and subversive must be removed from the government. This is not to say that people within the government should be labeled as subversive and disloyal. There are many within the government that had done a fine job, but it is a mere few that ruined it for the others. Source B goes on to say that it is not gossip that would have gotten someone thrown out of office, rather there needs to be substantial evidence.

  2. 1. Source D shows that the media is perhaps too extreme cmbating the threat of internal traitors. The fact that Actor Gary Cooper, according to Source D, is being convicted as a communist without any congruent proof exemplifies the point.
    2. Source A and C has a fundamentally different statement to their claims.
In Source A, the author blames communism as a threat, since it is spreading, and as the source of Bogota Revolution. However, Source C claims that it is more likely that their nation will be destroyed from the insiders of their country, not the outsider who the people in the United States were cautious of.
    3. Source B assist historians' understanding of the US government's concerns about communist infiltration by showing how "Witch-Hunting" could be dangerous. In the 1950's, McCarthy's public crusade against communism was a dangerous "Witch-Hunting" movement. The Source claims that people who are disloyal and subversive should be removed from the government however, a regular, loyal employes of the government should not be labeled as a communists.

  3. 1. Source D reveals the severity of communism threats to the government. It shows they do not take communism lightly. The committee was made to prevent anti-patriotism or anti-american threats.
    2. Both sources state that when communism spreads it is tragic and condolences go out to the people under this rule. They say that the choice to have communism is not a political one but a moral one; and communism is the morally wrong one. International communism spreading is a problem to the people of that nation because it takes away free will, and takes away opportunities to better yourself.
    3. Source B shows the way the government feels about communism because it states that they believe in the good nature of each politician and they don't want to do anything but help the country. And any rumors that may arise will not lead to dismissal unless there is sure proof. They do not want politicians to fear being seen as the opposition.

  4. 1) Source D reveals that the media paid quite a lot of attention to combat communism, they filled the rooms and got everything that they possibly could on tape or camera.

2)Source C was more personal and tried to reach more towards the audience, the person speaking tried to make it understandable by the audience and make them want believe in him. It led to more people.

    4) THe language is B and C determined its appeal to emotion and reason because it was addressed to a much more appealing audience and a much larger audience as well. WHich made people understand and connect to it much more than they would have otherwise, It appealed to people's emotions and gave the people reasons to agree with them.

  5. 1. Source D reveals how the American government was so obsessed with stopping communism and how they used media to stop the threat of communism and persecuted all those people that were against their ideas.
    2. In Source A, Marshall blames communism of all the failures of the Bogota Revolution in Colombia. This does not really make any sense since he points how communism was spreading out more in Europe and the damages that it caused and he justifies his blame based on that. However, I believe communism had nothing to do with the revolution.
In source C however, McCarthy does not blame communism for anything but he points out how communism is spreading out so rapidly and that it is urgent to stop it because the world is based now in a battle between communists and Christians. He compares the rate of growth of Communism and Christians as well and explains how they are so impotent face to communism right now because they are defeating them so much and invading their place.
    4) In source B there is the use of "must" as to express obligations and urgency. There are a lot of enumerations as well such as rumor, gossip or suspicion etc to point out multiple immoral things that can not keep going. In both sources B and C they use adjectives such as disloyal, subversive, moral, traitorous etc that are very strong words to talk against communism.
Source C the author uses as well words such as impotency or powerful enemies to insist in the fact that communism is getting too strong and powerful.

  6. 1. Source D reveals that the media was too extreme in combating communism. The HUAC targeted actors and actresses unlawfully and accused them of being communists.
    2. Sources A and C both emphasize the role international communism plays and how rapidly it can spread throughout the world. Source A is very specific in the places affected by international communism. Source B talks a lot about the numbers of people affected worldwide.
    5. I feel that people both in and out of the government feared communist infiltration. The forming of the HUAC shows that some people were very extreme in their methods of combating communism. There was really committee formed that would just accuse people of being communists and in many cases would ruin reputations of that person. This is unconstitutional and, ironically, undermines the laws of the democracy that these people are trying to protect.

  7. 1. Source D reveals the extent of media was taking the "problems" of communism very seriously and the HUAC seem to punish those who are communists.
    2. Both source A and C gave a sense that communism can spread out really quick and they are threatening those democratic nations because of their population. Source A is more general than source C, but source C shows a stronger opinion about international communism and really emphasize how endanger they are so they have to go against the communism.
    3. Source B assists historians understanding of the U.S. governments concern because it shows that what the government need to be aware of was not other enemy but inside itself. And it is strict because they don't allow those who were labeled as disloyal or potentially disloyal to exist in the government. And as it shows, those who are working for the government should not be communists because it is an expression of disloyal to the nation.

  8. 1. The picture in source D clearly shows that the media adamantly followed the exploits of the HUAC hearings. This is because the members of the movie industry that were tried in these hearings were already in the limelight, they already had the people's attention. Since the nation was already gripped by the Red Scare, the HUAC hearings were a field day for the media who needed popular stories to cover.

    2. Both documents discuss Communism from a global standpoint and not a local one. They blame Communism for causing various issues in foreign countries. However, in source C, Joseph McCartney stated that the problem was in the US and not abroad. He claimed that traitorous acts by American leaders were leading to the spread of Communism. While source A found no fault on the American people.

    3. Source B shows that the government realized how crazy McCarthyism was and how dangerous and detrimental it could be to our nation. It was after all a 'witch hunt' as President Truman described it. He explained that Federal employees should not be accused of disloyalty without any proof. The Federal employees are American citizens who are trying to improve our nation and as such they should not have to fear a witch hunt.

  9. 1. Source D reveals how scared America was of communism, and that there was a major effort to combat the threat of communism. That many cameras were not necessary. This scare was so big and so serious that special laws and privelages had to be made in the time of the 1950's.
    2. Source A and Source C both show how much power communism can have over such a large amount of people. For example in source A international communism was blamed for the unsuccessful Bogota revolution. While in source C it indicated the "swiftness of the tempo of Communist victories..." Source A has much more of a broader stand point while Source C gives specific examples of the Soviet Union.
    4. The language within Source B and C are much different. Source B has a much more pathetic appeal in trying to connect to your emotions. While Source C has much more factual context and is more of a ethical appeal in trying to gain credibility, by stating all these numbers and statistics. Source B also focuses a lot on disloyalty, which is different from Source C which views communism as a whole.

  10. 1 Sometimes a picture weights more than a thousand words. Source D shows the photograph of actor Gary Cooper on the witness stand in front of the HUAC. The scene is repleted by cameras and press. Obviously, Cooper's case was used as a deterrent to dispel communism sentiment. Without doubt, media was one of the most effective tools.
2 Communism takes the blame from both speeches. In source A, Marshall attributed the failure of Bogota revolution to Communism. In source B, McCarthy mainly talked about the wide spreading of Communism and prevention from Communism's infiltration in the country.
4 The use of language in Truman's speech is placid and mollifying. It does not only assert Truman's administration's determination on removing Communism within the federal government, but also appease people's anxiety on being vilified. The fact that the president has to come out and give a speech to assuage people's mind, means that the "witch hunt" phenomena is quite severe. In Source C, McCarthy's speech targets the general mass as its audiences. He pointed out that these renegades who support Communism are the ones who gain many benefits from the states. By pointing this "fact" out, McCarthy successfully manipulated the norms' minds by transforming their jealousy towards the wealthy to their hatred to Communism.

  11. Both source A and C gave a feel that communism can spread out very rapidly throughout the nation/world and they are threatening democratic nations because of population reasons. Source C shows a stronger opinion about international communism and really emphasize how endanger they are, so democracies have to go against communism.
Source B helps historians understand the U.S. governments concern because it discusses that the real danger is in their own government. Those who are disloyal will get removed from the government. There are many within the government that had do great jobs, but it is a mere few that ruined it for the others. Source B goes on to say that it is not rumors that would have gotten someone thrown out of office, but disloyalty.

  12. 1. Source D shows the media loved feeding off who the next american was to commit HUAC acts and how they media followed it daily to provide to he people. It also shows how extreme and unnecessary the media was.
    2. Source A and C show how rapidly communism can spread and how it effects all the people in the country it lives in. In source A, he blames communism for the Bogata Revolution and in Source C Mcarthy says that the peplum in the US is that we see the solvates doing it and it has no influenced more people to follow it.
    3. Source B helps historian understand its concerns because he says that if there is rumor or gossip about someone being disloyal they aren't just going to kick them out immediately. He is saying that he knows there could be a problem in the government but it does not mean that people are actually accused of this problem and that they are disloyal to the government.

  13. 1. Source D shows stuff about the media. It shows how the media was incorporated and how people would follow the media closely. It shows what extents the media would go to to give the public something to see. It started more drama and it was very unnecessary.
    2. Source A and C show how communism is spread. It shows that communism spreads quickly and there isn't much that anyone can do to stop it. In Source A communism was blamed on the Bogata revolution. In Source C Mccarthy says thats not the reason for communism. He said that the revolution hasnt influenced more people to follow communism.
    3. Source B shows how historians view government systems and communism. Also source B talks about Mccarthyism and how it can affect countries. It shows the concern that the US governments have over Mccarthyism and how it could easily destroy the nation.

  14. 1.) Source D shows an incredibly media-oriented interest in the governmental efforts to combat communism. This was most likely the case because of the governments initiative to rally public support in isolating the communists and fighting against it around the globe.
2.)There are much similarities between documents A and C and is mainly that communism is bad and a threat to the democracy and well-being of the United States. Source A blames communism for the Bogota Revolution and a force that provoked strikes in Italy and France. Source B takes the battle against communism to an all out war against atheism with Christianity of democracy's side. He turned the idea of the war into something else in an attempt to rally more ferocious support when religion comes into play.
3.) Both Sources B and C draw the most upon the audiences emotions. B talks more about the idea of hard working, loyal Americans who care about this nation and the rumors and gossip that can ruin them and their careers. It also is most likely an attempt to lessen public fear of communist infiltrators in our government. C draws the most on emotions, calling for people to invoke God to fight off the threat of Communism and how atheism is also an enemy- hand in hand with communism. It also uses startling statistics to show that Communism is a threat to be reckoned with with its spread around the globe.

  15. 1. I assume that in 1947 the media was not widely used as it is now. In that picture, so many people with the camera and flash light shows that communism drew a lot of attention to the country.
    2. In source A, international communism was blamed for everything. It even assumed the election in Italy will be affected. In source C, it is more focused on the internal communist in America. It tried to spread nationalism to people to prevent communism spreading in America.
    3. Truman was quite sarcastic in this excerpt, in an obvious way. He suspected many governors communist. Or just the fact that he is talking about it shows the infiltration of the communist in America.

  16. 1) Source D shows how extreme they were about the governments efforts to combat the threat of communism. Also how everyone in America cared about what was going on because they wanted it to be covered.

    2) Bogata revolution is the blame for the spread of communism and the revolution. In source C, It explains how the tides have changed in such a short period of time for worst in America. Also that with in america is where the most of the problems have came about.

    3) Source B shows the governments dislike for communism, they want to make sure that the people don't turn on the politicians, because the politicians care about the country. Also if rumors come about, no one would be dismissed with out proof.

  17. 1. Oh my the media got the peoples attention. Showing who was anti-American and a great way to get information. Americans cared and wanted to know if there neighbors were communist.
2.Well source C and A explains how communist spread in such a short period. Bogata revolution is part of the reason to blame for the spread.
3.well source B talks about how communism can affect a country. Also how McCarthy affected the country by accusing people.

  18. 1. Source D revels a lot about the extent of the media attention on the government with their efforts to combat Communism. In the source the photo shows lots of cameras and lights with hundreds of people in the small little room, proving that the government wanted to show to the world exactly what they were doing.
    2. Source A and C are both similar and different in many different ways regarding the activities of international communism. In source A it talks about the unsuccessful revolution in Bogota which was all blamed on the international communism. In source C it talks about more about the religious aspects of communism and comparing and contrasting communism and christianity.
    3. In source B the historians think that the government is the true source of all the lies. It also talks about how I think that from the source historians were implying that there were some communists from within our government.
